An Actor's Revenge - Poster

An Actor's Revenge

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: An Actor's Revenge (1963)

An Actor's Revenge is a backstage drama set in the world of kabuki theatre following the efforts of anonnagata, played by legendary actor Kazuo Hasegawa in his 300th film, to enact a dramatic vengeance against the men responsible for his parents' deaths.

With dazzling colour widescreen cinematography, director Kon Ichikawa plays with the conventions of stage melodrama and the line between fiction and reality within the fractured mind of his vengeful protagonist.

The Lost Daughter - Poster

The Lost Daughter

Synopsis:

?Calgary International Film Festival Presents: The Lost Daughter

In her feature directorial debut, Maggie Gyllenhaal adapts Elena Ferrante's striking 2006 novel. THE LOST DAUGHTER follows Leda (Olivia Colman), a divorced college professor on an Italian vacation where she meets and quickly becomes obsessed with a woman and her young daughter. As Leda gets increasingly involved in the lives of this other family, she is forced to confront her unsettling past.

Oscar-winner Olivia Colman brilliantly embodies this quietly tempestuous character, finely shading in the enigmatic relationships she creates with strangers. A moving yet unsettling inquiry into motherhood and personal freedom, Gyllenhaal’s adaptation maintains Ferrante’s signature ambiguity and matter-of-fact style.

The film features an outstanding supporting cast, including Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, Dakota Johnson, Paul Mescal, Alba Rohrwacher and Peter Sarsgaard.
