Burden of Dreams - Poster

Burden of Dreams

Synopsis:

The Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Burden of Dreams (1982)

Les Blank was best known for his profiles of musicians when he took on the monumental task of documenting the making of Werner Herzog's equally monumental production Fitzcarraldo. The film itself was the story of an act of extreme obsession—the transportation of a steamship by land over the Andes Mountains.

Herzog’s decision to replicate the feat in real life resulted in the production becoming a real-world mirror of the story’s depiction of the limits of mental and physical endurance. In documenting the production, Blank underwent his own trials as he attempted to make sense of the extreme personalities of Herzog and his star, the violent and unpredictable Klaus Kinski.

Genre: Documnetary

Director: Les Blank
Stars: Werner Herzog, Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale

The Mystery of Picasso

Synopsis:

The Calgary Cinematheque Presents: The Mystery of Picasso (1956)

Pablo Picasso is perhaps the most significant figure in European fine art in the first half of the 20th century, leading the way in innovative styles such as Cubism and Surrealism, while producing highly recognizable works that addressed both personal and political themes.

Henri-Georges Clouzot, best known for his thrillers The Wages of Fear and Diabolique, attempts to capture Picasso’s process by depicting the creation of 20 works of art filmed in real time. The resulting film was declared a national treasure by the French government and remains an engrossing glimpse into the methods of a unique genius.

This Is Spinal Tap

Synopsis:

Globe Cinema Presents: This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

Director Rob Reiner (as Marti DiBergi) follows the fictional English rock group Spinal Tap on their latest tour in this mockumentary. The legendary band, with a dozen or more studio albums, have a great deal to deal with. They clearly aren't as popular as they once were and face playing before sparse crowds in smaller venues.

They also have to deal with canceled dates (not to worry, their manager says when they learn their gig in Boston has been canceled, it's not a huge college town), arguments about their latest album cover and the arrival of one of the band member's girlfriend who would like to play a role in managing the band. All in all, not a successful tour.

Genre: Documentary, Music

Director: Rob Reiner
Stars: Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest
Running time: 1 hr 22 min
Rating: 14A
