Synopsis:


A League of Their Own Presents: Mirror Mirror (1990)

Before THE CRAFT, there was MIRROR MIRROR. Co-written by sisters Annette and Gina Cascone and directed by Marina Sargenti, the film follows high school goth Megan (Rainbow Harvest, a dead ringer for Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz character in BEETLEJUICE) as she deals with typical teenage stuff: crushes, bullies, and a haunted mirror that grants her supernatural powers. 

MIRROR MIRROR combines YA vibes straight out of a Christopher Pike novel with plenty of R-rated thrills. But the film’s most notable—and enjoyable—aspect is its nuanced portrayal of relationships between women, which was rare for the horror genre in 1990.

On Saturday, October 24, the Calgary Underground Film Festival takes over Globe Cinema for our annual 12-Hour Halloween Horror Movie Marathon. 7 movies from 7pm until 7am the next morning, including a costume contest and other fun treats throughout the night. Tickets are on sale now.

An actor loses their dream role because of their "ugly cry" — causing them to spiral down the dark and dangerous path to perfection.

When Delaney's (writer-director Emily Robinson) boyfriend leaves town to shoot a splashy zombie movie, she becomes obsessed with a character she's auditioning for after she learns the producers think she has an "ugly cry." But when she tries to make her cry prettier, her performance suffers. Can she contort herself, and her face, to have the perfect cry?

Her attempts to change herself cause Young Delaney to haunt her, catapulting present-day Delaney deeper down the rabbit hole. She isolates herself and grows increasingly delusional, and interested in physical fixes to her acting problem. How can she make the world see her as she sees herself? How can she become and become and become? She will become famous. Or die trying.

DIRECTOR'S BIO
Emily Robinson is a writer, director, and SAG Award-nominated, Special Drama Desk Award-winning actor known for her work in EIGHTH GRADE, THE YEAR BETWEEN, PRIVATE LIFE, THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING, and TRANSPARENT. Her directorial debut feature film, UGLY CRY, premiered at SXSW 2026. Her short films have screened at numerous festivals, such as LA Film Festival, Outfest, and Frameline. Her debut novel, CONSUMED, was published in 2023. Robinson holds a B.A. in Creative Writing from Columbia University.

Based on Aldous Huxley’s novel “The Devils of Loudun” and John Whiting’s play “The Devils,” Ken Russell’s X-rated spectacle of the depraved stars Vanessa Redgrave as a hunchbacked nun whose lust for priest Father Grandier (Oliver Reed) sets off a perverse witch hunt and unleashes an orgy of sadomasochistic sacrilege.

Newly restored in its full runtime and in 4K, this is a must see for the uninitiated as well as the devout followers of its cult influence.

The Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)


Following the financial failure of his Faust, Murnau came to Hollywood where he had been invited by William Fox to make an Expressionist style film in America. Murnau chose to collaborate with Carl Mayer, who had written The Last Laugh three years earlier, to create a humanist fable about a young couple from the country who lose each other in the confusion and sin of the big city, before coming back together again. 

Sunrise features cinematography from Karl Struss which not only utilizes Murnau's unchained cinema style, but also features gorgeous special effects shots using amazing sets built for the production. The poetic story garnered incredible praise at the time and won several awards at the very first Academy Awards including "Best Unique and Artistic Picture" and "Best Cinematography." Coming at the dawn of the sound era, the film features music and sound effects, but no dialogue and few title cards.
