Synopsis:


A League of Their Own Presents: Mirror Mirror (1990)

Before THE CRAFT, there was MIRROR MIRROR. Co-written by sisters Annette and Gina Cascone and directed by Marina Sargenti, the film follows high school goth Megan (Rainbow Harvest, a dead ringer for Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz character in BEETLEJUICE) as she deals with typical teenage stuff: crushes, bullies, and a haunted mirror that grants her supernatural powers. 

MIRROR MIRROR combines YA vibes straight out of a Christopher Pike novel with plenty of R-rated thrills. But the film’s most notable—and enjoyable—aspect is its nuanced portrayal of relationships between women, which was rare for the horror genre in 1990.

The Calgary International Film Festival, presented by Servus Credit Union, returns in 2026 for its 27th year! Bringing the best of local, Canadian, and international cinema culminates in eleven days of celebration from September 24 to October 4, 2026.


CIFF is one of Western Canada’s largest and most influential film festivals, showcasing hundreds of feature films, documentaries, and shorts from Alberta, across Canada, and around the world.

Audiences can experience screenings alongside Q&As, red carpet events, live music, art installations, special events, and more. CIFF also brings Alberta’s vibrant film industry together through Industry Conference, featuring talks, panels, networking opportunities, and keynote speakers. Accredited industry professionals, emerging creators, students, and film lovers come together to celebrate and connect through the art of cinema.

Screenings will be hosted by our partners at Globe Cinema, The
Plaza Theatre, The GRAND, Contemporary Calgary (opening night only), and Cineplex Chinook Theatre.

After more than a decade of sober political dramas and socially minded period pieces, the great Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi shifted gears dramatically for this rapturously stylized quartet of ghost stories. Featuring colorfully surreal sets and luminous cinematography, these haunting tales of demonic comeuppance and spiritual trials, adapted from writer Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folklore, are existentially frightening and meticulously crafted.


Please note: the DCP version of Kwaidan is a 4K restoration of the original three-hour cut. The 35mm of Kwaidan is the 161-minute Cannes print.
