Gummo - Poster

Gummo

Synopsis:

Globe Cinema Presents: Gummo (1997)

Harmony Korine’s debut feature is an audacious, lyrical evocation of America’s rural underbelly, and an elegy in the southern-gothic tradition of William Faulkner and William Eggleston. Shot in Korine’s native Nashville—standing in for the tornado-ravaged Xenia, Ohio—the rough-hewn film follows two young friends, Tummler and Solomon, as they ride around town, huffing glue and hunting stray cats, their every local encounter charged with vaudevillian anarchy as well as deep pathos.

At once transgressive and empathetic, disturbing and undeniably beautiful, Gummo is a one-of-a-kind portrait of angelic and devilish souls caught in a cultural void, circumscribed by poverty and the depleted, alienated spiritual life of late-twentieth-century America.

Lucky Star

Synopsis:

Globe Cinema & Kino Sum Productions Presents: Lucky Star (2024)

When reformed gambler Lucky falls victim to a tax scam, he returns to playing poker to make the money back. Meanwhile, his family tries to make ends meet by resorting to their own morally dubious strategies. Lucky Star is a family drama about fatherly love, deceit, and redemption, and a slice of life from the Chinese-prairie diaspora.

Filmed in Calgary and written and directed by local filmmaker Gillian McKercher, LUCKY STAR (2024) is an authentic view into the lives of those who inspired the film.

"Within every family are its own legends and failures – mine is no exception. Family gossip tells me that my great-grandfather gambled an entire block of Calgary’s Chinatown away in a single night of cards. There are more verifiable stories where the men in my life have gambled, while their tough mothers, wives, and daughters
held everything together. And yet, through it all, we’ve loved each other, and we’ve moved on. That's the dynamic I wanted to bring to Lucky Star." -  Gillian McKercher

Watermark - Poster

Watermark

Synopsis:

The University of Calgary Department of Communication, Media and Film Presents: Watermark (2013)

Every living thing requires water. We humans interact with it in a myriad of ways, numerous times a day. But how often do we consider the complexity of that interaction? And, unless confronted by scarcity, when do we meditate on its ubiquity in creating, sustaining and enriching life?

Watermark is a feature documentary film that brings together diverse stories from around the globe about our relationship with water: how we are drawn to it, what we learn from it, how we use it and the consequences of that use. We see massive floating abalone farms off China’s Fujian coast and the construction site of the biggest arch dam in the world – the Xiluodu, six times the size of the Hoover. We visit the barren desert delta where the mighty Colorado River no longer reaches the ocean, and the
water-intensive leather tanneries of Dhaka.

We witness how humans are drawn to water, from the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach to the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, where thirty million people gather for a sacred bath in the Ganges at the same time. We speak with scientists who drill ice cores two kilometers deep into the Greenland Ice Sheet, and roam the sublime pristine watersheds of Northern British Columbia.

Shot in stunning 5K ultra high-definition video and full of soaring aerial perspectives, this film shows water as a terraforming element and the scale of its reach, as well as the magnitude of our need and use. This is balanced by forays into the particular: a haunting memory of a stolen river, a mysterious figure roaming ancient rice terraces, the crucial data hidden in a million year old piece of ice, a pilgrim’s private ritual among thousands of others at the water’s edge.

Watermark is directed by multiple award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal and renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky, and is the third part of Burtynsky’s Water project, which includes a book Burtynsky: Water and a major photographic exhibition. Filmed and produced by Nicholas de Pencier and three years in the making, it is a logical extension of the trio’s previous collaboration, Manufactured Landscapes.

In Watermark, the viewer is immersed in a world defined by a magnificent force of nature that we all too often take for granted - until it’s gone.

Little Darlings

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Little Darlings (1980)

At summer camp, two 15-year-old rivals from different walks of life are pressured by their fellow campers into competing in a contest: the first girl to lose her virginity will be declared the winner. While the premise sounds like something out of the American Pie franchise, this film has more in common with a coming-of-age drama than a screwball comedy.

Due to rights issues related to the music, the film was once lost in time. It finally received a long-overdue release in 2024 after being confined to VHS for over 40 years. The film stars Oscar-winning actress Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol as her competitor, alongside Matt Dillon in one of his early screen roles.

Genre: Comedy

Director: Ron Maxwell
Stars: Tatum O'Neal, Kristy McNichol, Armand Assante

Foxes - Poster

Foxes

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Foxes (1980)

This coming-of-age story follows four teenagers living in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. The film exudes punk rock energy, thanks to an outstanding performance by rock legend Cherie Currie of The Runaways.

The four girls face a myriad of challenges: a divorced mom who's dating again, abusive boyfriends, addiction, and party-crashing classmates. While the teens long to appear mature, things never quite go as planned. The film perfectly captures the malaise of early adulthood—too young for sophisticated dinner parties, too old for childish games.

Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster stars as Jeanie, with a brief cameo from Laura Dern.

Genre: Drama

Director: Adrian Lyne
Stars: Jodie Foster, Cherie Currie, Marilyn Kagan
