Do the Right Thing - Poster

Do the Right Thing

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Do the Right Thing (1989)

An early scene of summer levity in Do the Right Thing is scored by a Steel Pulse song. The groovy rhythm matches what we are seeing on screen, but the lyrics heed a warning of what is to come — you can’t stand the heat.

Spike Lee’s masterpiece captures the hottest day of the summer turning “everyday” class and racial tensions into a political pressure cooker that is still as relevant in 2025 as it was in 1989. The camera moves, and the performers shine with a vibrancy that other filmmakers have been chasing for over thirty years, to no avail.

Under-heralded at the Academy Awards (two nominations, zero wins), this movie’s reputation has only grown with age. The 2022 BFI Sight and Sound Poll placed this film at #24 on its list of the Greatest Films of All Time. The film is passionate, vibrant, insightful, tragic, and authentic. Don’t miss your chance to see Do the Right Thing on the big screen!

Genre: Comedy, Drama

Director: Spike Lee
Stars: Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee
Running time: 2 hr 00 min

Gimme Shelter

Synopsis:

Blackbyrd Myoozik Calgary Presents: Gimme Shelter (1970)

A documentary on the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour and the tragic events that concluded it. We see footage of their concerts and of them making the Sticky Fingers album in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. However, the main focus of the film is on one concert - Altamont Speedway, outside San Francisco, 6 December 1969. A free concert, it is the Stones' idea and it was meant to be the Woodstock of the West (Woodstock having occurred four months earlier).

Other bands performing included Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Ike and Tina Turner, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Santana. However, it is far from being the peace and love of Woodstock. Part of the problem is that the Stones hired the Hells Angels as security. The other problem was that a large portion of the crowd were high on drugs. Friction ensues. During the Stones' set, Meredith Hunter, high on methamphetamine and armed with a gun, makes a lunge for the stage and is stabbed to death by the Hells Angels. The peace and love era of the 60s was over.
